Mystery Photo: Uniontown Hose Company in 1959

This photograph, dated 1959 and showing the Uniontown Hose Company in full dress uniform, was donated to the Historical Society by the Rivertowns Enterprise. The firemen are standing in front of their brand new firehouse on Rose Street, which was dedicated on Saturday, December 6, 1959. This photograph may have been taken at the dedication ceremony. But apart from Chief Aresta Aluisio, second from the right, we have no identifications. Do you recognize anyone else? Click the photograph and look at it more closely in Flickr. If you need to enlarge it, click the “All Sizes” link above the photograph.

If you don’t know, but are curious about the answers, come back to the blog and check this post. We’ll attach comments with any information we receive.

  2. James Bennett of Hastings is the 10th person from the right in the main row. He was a trustee for a term in the late 50's as well. His family live in Hastings for a long time after his death in 1962.

  3. And Bob Russell also tells us that Joe Trojak is on the far right.

  4. James Bennett was not only a Village trustee but also an engineer for Rudin Brothers, a Manhattan real estate developer. The NY Marathon trophy is the "Samuel Rudin Trophy". The first marathon was in 1976 and was won by Dr. Norbert Sander who resides at 12 Lincoln Avenue, Hastings.

Mr. Bennett designed the Uniontown firehouse. There is a photo of him and Aresta Aluisio laying the cornerstone of the building, and can be seen at Hastings Electric store. Perhaps a copy of this photo could be obtained by or donated to the Society?

  5. Correction: Dr Norbert Sander won the fifth NY Marathon in 1974 and is married to one of James Bennett's daughters.

  6. Janet Aluisio D'Alio has identified a few more of the Uniontown firemen. On the right of her father Aresta is George Gunther. Three of the men in the row behind Aresta's row are George Dumbleton, Louis Cardullo, and Ron Paquette. Thanks, Janet!
